Cuba Christmas Parade!

Mrs. Claus was on the library's parade float with a troop of awesome girl scouts last Saturday! Afterwards, Mrs. Claus was joined by Santa and they held a story time for the children.  Books were read, bookmarks were made, and the children got to get their pictures taken with the jolly Claus couple.  When story time was over, a wonderful performance was held by The Treble Clefs choir.  Be sure to join in the festivities again next year!

Miracle on Main Street in Fredericktown!

The Fredericktown branch hosted Mrs. Claus for two story telling sessions on December 3.  She read 'Twas the Night Before Christmas and How the Grinch Stole Christmas.  During the parade, she joined her husband, Santa Claus, to say hello to the good people of Fredericktown.  Kids also colored in Holiday Characters like Santa Claus, snowmen, and toy soldiers and these were hung up on the circulation desk to be enjoyed throughout the holiday.

Youth Education Day!

On October 7, 2016, I had the pleasure of having a booth in Fredericktown at the Youth Education Day event held by the University of Missouri Extension Office.  Branch Manager, Bill Knight, joined me, as we talked about the services our library offers and all of the fun things besides books that we have.  We reached out to many of the Fredericktown preschools and daycares as well as the Marquand School District. Each child took home a goodie bag with information packets, a pencil, eraser, and bookmark!

Old Miners' Day 2016

I want to thank everyone that stopped by the library's table at Old Miners' Day in Viburnum.  I had such a great time telling people about the library and helping the kids make bookmarks.  If you didn't get a chance to make it out, here's what you missed:

  • We made bookmarks to take home
  • We had a raffle for adults and youth.  The adult winners received a library t-shirt or a library coffee mug.  The youth winners received a t-shirt or a free book.
  • We had information on services we offer at the library as well as some specific flyers about services we offer for kids.
  • Bookmarks were handed out with the new library hours.  Starting November 1, 2016, the Viburnum branch hours will change to Mondays 10-2 and Thursdays 2-6.  However, story time will still take place on Wednesdays at 2:30 so the library will be open from 2-4 on story time days for story hour.
Thanks again to everyone that came and below, you'll find some pictures of the event.

Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day cards were first produced and mailed in 1797 in England. Mass production in the United States took off after 1847.

It was not until the mid-20th century that people expanded from card exchanges to a variety of different gifts, including chocolates, flowers, and so on.

According to Mass Media, "The U.S. Greeting Card Association estimates that approximately 190 million valentines are sent each year in the US. Half of those valentines are given to family members other than husband or wife, usually to children. When the valentine-exchange cards made in school activities are included the figure goes up to 1 billion, and teachers become the people receiving the most valentines. The average valentine’s spending has increased every year in the U.S, from $108 a person in 2010 to $131 in 2013".

Although many people celebrate Valentine's Day as romantic love, it's encouraged to celebrate the love of family and friends! And pets!

Come check out a few Valentine's Day books at your nearest branch!
