All About Animals- It's Fall Story Time at Ozark Regional Library!

Want to read about ducks who ride bikes?  Dance the Bunny Hokey Pokey?  Make a paper chain snake?  Well, get ready, because Fall Story Time for Toddlers and Preschoolers starts Tuesday, September 4!

Our theme this fall is All About Animals, and each week, I'll be visiting Ozark Regional's eight library branches with a box full of supplies- hello to ten weeks of stories, music, games, activity tables, and craft projects.  Some things to look forward to: creating cute coffee bears in week one, having a water table duck race in week five, and making paper cup horse weather vanes in week seven!

You can find a complete story time schedule in the left-hand column of this blog or at the library's website under the "Programs and Events" tab.  If you're more of a paper person, you can also stop by your local library in person to pick up a colorful, printed calendar of events.

Stay tuned for info and pictures from our first week of fall story time; we hope to see YOU there!

Graphic Novel Picks

Well, summer has nearly ended, and fall hasn't quite begun.  Since children's and teen programming is paused at the library for the month of August (we have to clean up from summer and prepare for fall, after all!), over the next several weeks, I'll be posting a handful of "Book Pick Lists" with suggestions for recommended reading.  What better way to fill those lazy dog-days than with a good book- or two... or three..?

Graphic novels are usually quick reads you can wrap up in a jiff, so I'll start you out with three of our favorites here at the library!

Book cover images and summaries from Goodreads.

Annie Sullivan and the Trails of Helen Keller by Joseph Lambert- The Center for Cartoon Studies presents a wholly original take on the story of Annie Sullivan and Helen Keller in the fifth book of the award-winning series of graphic novel biographies.

Babymouse: Cupcake Tycoon (Babymouse series, #13) by Jennifer and Matthew Holm The school library is having a fund-raiser, and Babymouse is determined to raise the most money and WIN the GRAND PRIZE! Or... er, to help the school! The competition is fierce, but Babymouse will stop at nothing to get what she wants, even if it means outselling every last kid in school... including her nefarious nemesis, Felicia Furrypaws.

Mouse Guard: Winter 1152 by David Peterson- In this sequel to Mouse Guard: Fall 1152, the Guard face a food and supply shortage threatening the lives of many through a cold and icy season. Saxon, Kenzie, Lieam, and Sadie, led by Celanawe, traverse the snow-blanketed territories acting as diplomats to improve relations between the mouse cities and the Guard. This is a winter not every Guard may survive.

Fall 2012 Schedule Correction

Oops!  I noticed an error in the upcoming Fall Story Time schedule I'd like to correct.  I originally had the Ironton Library's first story time planned for Monday, September 3rd... but then I realized that Monday was actually Labor Day and a holiday on which all Ozark Regional libraries are closed!  So, mark your calendars- NO story time at Ironton on Sept. 3rd; instead, Ironton's first story time session will be on Monday, Sept. 10th.  Story time will be held on the normal times and days for Sept. 4-7 for all other Ozark Regional branches listed.

If you have any questions, feel free to call the Ironton Library at 573.546.2615, or send us a message at the Youth Department email address!

Wrapping Up Dream Big- READ!

Thanks to all the kids and families who made our Dream Big- READ Summer Reading Program 2012 such a success!  Not all of the numbers are in yet, but I know we had great program attendance and summer reading club participation across the Ozark Regional system.  We also had lots of outstanding entries for our July Contest Month, and I'll be revealing the winners of the Coloring Contests and "My Favorite Book" Contests in the next few days!

And don't forget about fall programming- the library doesn't stop when school starts!  This year, our theme for Toddler/Preschool Story Time is "All About Animals", and we have lots of fun activities planned, like dancing the Bunny Hokey Pokey and making paper chain snakes!  Story time programming begins the first week of September; pick up a paper copy of the story time schedule at the front desk of your local library, or check out the online version by clicking the schedule image in the left-hand column of this blog.

Soak up the rest of the summer, and keep reading!!
