Books Into Movies...

I just realized there are a TON of great teen books being made into movies (or that are recently out in theaters)!  Below, you can find trailers for a few of our favorites at Ozark Regional: Catching Fire (based on book two of Suzanne Collin's The Hunger Games series), The Book Thief  by Marcus Zuzak, and Divergent (based on book one of Veronica Roth's Divergent series- this one's coming out in March!).  And remember, stop by your local library to read the series before checking out the big screen version!

A Treasure Trove of Authors!

Well, the annual Missouri Library Association Conference was spectacular- lots of great workshops (with tons of new programming ideas I can't wait to try out!), networking, and author visits!  I snagged a couple of pics for your viewing enjoyment:

Brian Selznick (Yes, THE Brian Selznick of Caldecott fame, who wrote The Invention of Hugo Cabret, which is currently being made into a movie.  You can view the movie trailer here.) made a surprise appearance and signed a few copies of his most recent book, Wonderstruck.

Deborah Diesen was the featured speaker for MLA's Thusnelda Schmidt Children's Luncheon.  Diesen is the winner of this year's Building Block Picture Book Award, sponsored by the Missouri Association of School Librarians and voted upon by school age children in the state of Missouri.

Clare Vanderpool was the featured speaker for MLA's YASIG Luncheon and was the winner of the 2011 Newberry Medal for her historical novel, Moon Over Manifest.

If you haven't read any of these author's amazing books, what are you waiting for?  Check one out, and keep reading!

Quotability #2

"Having your book turned into a movie is like seeing your oxen turned into bouillon cubes." -John LeCarre

Tons of children's and teen books have been made into movies over the years.  Recent adaptations that spring to mind are the contemporized Mr. Popper's Penguins and the sweetly nostalgic Winnie the Pooh.  And don't forget the second installment of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and the Smurfs and their blue village- in 3-D!

LeCarre may be right; some books just don't translate well to the silver screen.  But others are great and may even enrich our experiences with a storyline.  What's your favorite book-to-movie pick?  Which one could you just not stand (anybody else thinking of Inkheart?)?

Go watch a movie, and then... keep reading ;-)
