The Science of Sound

Mad Science of St. Louis visited all four of our branches for a wonderful performance called The Science of Sound.  We learned all about how sound travels and what sound waves are and how different sounds can be created from everyday objects found around the house.  The kids (and adults) really enjoyed themselves!  Some of the highlights of the performances were “Frankenpickle” and the potato shooter.  See the pics below!

Exploring Africa

This summer, we decided to focus on different cultures and the customs of different countries.  The first place we explored was Africa.  We read the book “We All Went on Safari” and talked about the different holidays, dances, and instruments used in Africa.  For our craft, we made a drum and then played our drums along with an African CD.  Tribal masks were provided as a second activity or take-home activity.  For our snack, we tried plantain chips which are common in certain parts of Africa.  Personally, I think they taste like potato chips but some of the kids disagreed with me.  Check out pics below!
